Forney Saloons

A Forney saloon, circa 1890
One of Forney's saloons, around 1890.

Daugherty's Billiard Parlor (formerly R.H. Russell's Saloon), about 1890, located on Pacific Street between Bois d'Arc and Elm. L to R: Lafe Lindsey, unidentified (Harrison Daugherty ?), Bailey H. Daugherty, Jim Harris, Joe Carpenter.

Today, Forney is "dry," meaning no alcohol is sold within the city limits, except in selected restaurants with a special license. But at one time, Forney's reputation was less than pristine. The newspapers of the era are filled with stories of drinking, brawls, gambling and other colorful incidents.

As can been seen by the following article, Forney was quite the lively place in the 19th century!

Forney Tribune
November 18, 1891
Forney, Texas

Those Dallas reprobates [prostitutes] who were here Saturday night stole the keys to the McKellar and Martin Layden hay [warehouses] and used those buildings for their disreputable practices. This is the second time they have used the McKellar barn.
